DNA test for bird sexing

DNA sexing has become the preferred method for identifying the sex of monomorphic birds (males and females have no external differences). DNA sexing can be performed with blood or feather samples. Both blood and feather samples are equally reliable and provide the same level of testing accuracy. The method you choose depends on your preference.

Samples: 1 drop of blood or 4 - 5 fresh feathers

Blood can easily be collected by clipping the bird’s nail and spot a drop of blood on paper. Plucked feathers from the chest or the tail must have a follicle at the end. This follicle contains the DNA for testing. Please do not use molted feathers.
